Hello, my fellow Otaku. Charles here to talk about some stuff I been watching on Crunchyroll. At the time of this article, Crunchyroll had three episodes running. I will follow up when the other episodes drop.

I originally got hooked into this anime TV show because of all the fan video clips all over the 4chan and few other sites I visit asking “What Anime is this from,”  so I said I find out, so log in to my Crunchyroll account an I found it.

The picture and the video of Bell Cranel and goddess Hestia brushing their teeth to fan imported music. I needed to know what Anime tv series this was. So, as usual, I went to look on Crunchyroll first and I found it there.

“Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” ダンジョンに出会いを求めるのは間違っているだろうか or DanMachi (for short. ダンまち in Japanese) Familia Myth is a Japanese light novel series written by Fujino Ōmori and illustrated by Suzuhito YasudaSB Creative has published eight volumes since January 2013 under their GA Bunko imprint. It has received a spin-off light novel series and three manga adaptations. An anime television series adaptation by J.C.Staff began airing the broadcast night of April 3, 2015.

The story revolves around the world where Gods and Goddess come to live in the world beside us and they seal away their powers to live in the human world. They choose young heroes and heroines to create “families” (more like guilds) to whom the gods and goddess give blessings (Leveling Up). The heroes and heroines then go into Dungeons and bring back treasure or treasures to the gods and goddesses.

This story focuses on Bell Cranel & Hestia, who are the only members in the house of Hestia.  Bell Cranel & Hestia are alone in the house and Hestia truly likes it that way. There is a conflict in the story between Bell Cranel and Hestia, as Bell Cranel wants to increase the size of their family.

Bell Cranel is the main hero in the show, who falls in love with Liz Wallenstein or at least thinks he is in love with this young female warrior who saves his life in a Dungeon. So, the opening episodes are about him trying to get stronger to impress the young lady and win her affection. In the process Hestia gets jealous. The story is a fairly simple, boy-wants-one-girl, girl-he-lives-with-loves-him-but-says-nothing story, and all hell breaks loose because no one tells each other how they feel.

So the first thing I love about the show is when Bell Cranel in Episode 1 (Bell Cranel | Adventurer), returns to Hestia to receive her blessing (leveling up). What?! He has to get blessed by a goddess in order to level up!? Nice!

When you’re playing RPG or MMORPG there is never an interaction with a real reason for level-up. Usually, making the character stronger or getting new abilities or power, is just a game mechanic. Using Blessing or Blessings to explain leveling up in this TV is pure genius. The creator turned a natural game mechanic into a function of life of the adventurer in this world. This very interesting use of a game mechanic in the show, makes you want to keep watching it. This appeals to role player in all of us and made the show more interesting for me.

The other interesting aspect of the show is the focus on Greek/Roman mythology in the first few episodes.

The first god & goddesses we meet in the story are a small selection of Greek/Roman Gods & goddesses as well as later stories we meet Norse, Egyptian, Hindu gods & goddesses.

Also, many goddesses are actually male in the actual Greek/ Roman mythology, but then we would lose all the eye candy.  I’m sure the creator had a reason for the sex changes.

Like Hestia’s sister, god is Loki or Norse mythology and is now a woman (it should be noted the in Norse Mythology Loki was a shapeshifter and often turned into a woman from time to time).

Bell Cranel’s goddess is Hestia and she is the embodiment of the goddess of the home in Greek mythology. She is a virgin goddess of the hearth, architecture, and the right ordering of domesticity, the family, and the state. In Greek mythology, she is a daughter of Cronus and Rhea.  So she prefers to stay at home and cook, she sleeps most of the day and is a homebody.

Many of the personalities of the Greek/Roman, Norse, Egyptian, Hindu gods & goddesses are the embodiments of their names, which made the show funnier.

There only 13 episodes on Crunchyroll and I enjoyed watching each one of them. When we launch Otaku Times, I will go into more detail about the show.  The interactions between the characters are great, and I am looking forward to future episodes.

Hey, fellow otaku who have been running DDO (Dungeon & Dragons Online), “Ever Quest”, or “World of Warcraft” and have you tried to pick up a girl in a dungeon?
